BioWare’s game was originally one of the most popular RPGs two decades ago, but we can only speculate about the status of the remake, despite its announcement some time ago.
Jason Schreier, writing for Bloomberg, tweeted that Saber Interactive has been left with Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake after the company (and a number of studios) left the Embracer Group. We wrote more about this yesterday. Schreier believes that the game may remain one of the joint projects, as it fits the definition of “a previously announced AAA game based on a major license”. According to Schreier, it is the only game that fits the definition perfectly, but it is not yet known what agreement has been reached.
Lars Wingefors, CEO of Embracer Group, was asked on a conference call if this AAA title based on a major license will be released in the next twelve months. He replied that a game like this deserves deeper love and respect, and without going into details, he thinks it will be a while before this title is released. So he also implied that the remake will NOT be released in the next fiscal year, which starts in April!
But think about it: it was announced for PlayStation 5 in 2021. In July 2022, we heard that it might have been delayed, but it turned out that it had been moved to another studio. Then came the collapse of Embracer Group’s $2 billion deal with Savvy Games, which resulted in Embracer having to lay off more than 1,000 people, stop development on a new Deus Ex, close several studios, sell others… and refuse to say anything directly about a remake of Star Wars: KotOR.
It’s unbelievable what kind of development hellhole the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake could be in. They’ve even removed all references to it from PlayStation’s social media platforms!

Must be – it’s the only game that fits. Not sure what kind of deal they struck there
