Could The Next Titles In Capcom’s Two Biggest Franchises Be Open World?

Rumors suggest that the Japanese publisher is starting to move towards an open-world concept for two of its IPs; while this seems like a perfectly reasonable move for one franchise, the other example could be a slightly unusual change.

A well-known Capcom insider, Dusk Golem, has taken to Twitter to reveal what the Japanese company is (rather surprisingly) planning behind the scenes. The development of the RE engine (which is slowly becoming RE neXt, or REX engine) could change the way the publisher has been thinking:

“So here’s a little tidbit: Capcom often greenlights new initiatives in groups of three. Good examples are Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Devil May Cry V, which were all greenlit pretty close together to take advantage of their new RE engine, and the idea to remake Resident Evil 2 inspired them to remake Resident Evil 3 and Resident Evil 4 as well. Dragon’s Dogma 2 expanded the functionality of the RE engine for open-world games, and the other two games based on this technology are Monster Hunter: Wilds and Resident Evil 9,” wrote Dusk Golem.

According to him, both the new Resident Evil and the new Monster Hunter could be open world. For Monster Hunter, we can even imagine that it could work, but for survival horror, it would be a big change, because even Resident Evil: Village (or RE8, if you prefer…) was only partly like that, because although it was set where you had to go, it was often possible to wander off to get some treasure to upgrade your weapons.

Monster Hunter: Wilds has already been announced at The Game Awards and will be coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC in 2025, while Resident Evil 9 has not yet been announced. It’s been in development since 2018, according to Dusk Golem, but it’s not official.
