Is An Older Sonic Game Getting A Remake?

Not only has SEGA modernized parts of the Yakuza franchise (though it’s done, the IP has since been renamed Like A Dragon), but another episode of a series considered more iconic in the West is rumored to be in the pipeline with a more modern version.

First, a Portuguese publication, Universo Nintendo, asked on Twitter if the public would be able to play a version of Sonic Heroes released in 2003 running on Unreal Engine 5. This “suggestion” was then confirmed by a well-known SEGA/Atlus insider, who also heard that a remake of the Team Sonic game using Unreal Engine 5 is indeed in the works. The person has previously talked a lot about the Japanese company’s remakes and reboots (Jet Set Radio, Crazy Taxi, Golden Axe), all of which will appear on the yet-to-be-announced successor to the Nintendo Switch, and also said that a new Virtua Fighter with cross-play support and rollback netcode is in the works.

Sonic Heroes was released in 2004 (December 30, 2003 in Japan) for PlayStation 2, Xbox and GameCube, followed by a PC port in late 2004. It also appeared on the PlayStation Network in 2012 in Europe and 2014 in Japan, but curiously missed out on a digital re-release in North America, even though it was aimed more at that audience. There were four different teams to control (Team Sonic, Team Dark, Team Rose, and Team Chaotix, each with a unique storyline).

Another innovation in the gameplay of Sonic Heroes was the ability to switch between the three characters on your team at any time, and improve their abilities individually by using power-ups on the stages. The pacing was relatively fast, but the end result wasn’t that great… although it was light years better than Sonic The Hedgehog in 2006.

Sonic Heroes Remake is still just a rumor, as SEGA hasn’t officially talked about it, and probably won’t for a while. In any case, it’s an interesting idea to make a remake of this very game.
