CD Projekt RED (CDPR) has several marshmallows in the fire at the same time, and their games seem to be slowly moving forward in the development stages, but don’t expect them to be months away.
The Witcher’s new trilogy, Polaris, has so far been told by CDPR that it will enter full development during 2024, but that has not yet happened, as the Polish company says it is still in pre-production, or pre-development, at the end of February. The project codenamed Sirius, the Witcher spin-off being worked on by Thr Molasses Flood, is in a similar pre-production phase after a creative reset. The Witcher Remake, as well as a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, are in an even younger, conceptual stage.
It follows that we should not expect any new games from the Polish developers in the near future. But they have abandoned their own technology, so REDengine was last used in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Still, it doesn’t seem to have helped CDPR much to switch to Unreal Engine 5, which is a widely used engine in the game industry (the other being Unity).
Most of the developers are working on the main The Witcher sequel, but many are also working on the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel at CDPR’s Boston studio. For this reason, it is understandable that the development of Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty is essentially finished (i.e. they will only patch the game and DLC if specifically needed, e.g. due to buggy drivers). About 20 people are working on a new IP, Project Hadar, so some have moved over to that project.
By the way, 2023 was the second best year for CDPR. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty added 5 million units to the base game’s 20 million. The Witcher franchise is also at 75 million, so the Polish team has now added up the three figures to more than 100 million sales.
