What CD Projekt RED (CDPR) said to Ubisoft could be interpreted as a joke, but it could also be interpreted as a response from the Poles to raise the bar even higher, as they responded to an earlier comment from the French publisher with an interesting reply.
Skull & Bones, finally released after many years of development hell and a reboot, was, according to Ubisoft, the first AAAA game. We’ve heard this phrase from the Yves Guillemot-led publisher before, as Beyond Good & Evil 2 was also called AAAA (although we can’t believe it’s actually being released…). The problem is that gamers don’t really agree with this phrase: if Ubisoft’s game really represented a new level, then a lot of people would play it, and the opposite seems to be true.
CDPR has also reacted to the AAAA statement, as reported by StockWatch.pl. Karolina Gnaś, CDPR’s Vice President of Investor Relations, received a comment from an investor that Ubisoft is now releasing AAAA games because of Skull & Bones. Gnaś jokingly said that CDPR’s games will be AAAAA titles. In the case of many games, AAA is an empty term, because it is not really used for much more than marketing, and the quality of the product in question is not what you would expect.
CDPR is currently working on several projects at once. We’ve already reported that they’re working on The Witcher 4, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, a spin-off of The Witcher, and a remake of the first part of The Witcher. All of these will now be made with Unreal Engine 5 instead of the proprietary REDengine. Just don’t let all the A’s get into a shouting match. In ten years, we’ll get AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA games. And it’s already starting to look pretty silly.
