STEAM DECK NEWS – A rival to the Steam Deck is already more powerful than Valve’s handheld PC in its current iteration, but Lenovo will also be adding more powerful hardware to the Legion Go, as the Chinese company is set to invest more heavily in this market segment.
Speaking at Lenovo’s Innovate 2024 conference, Clifford Chong, gaming segment manager for the APAC region, said that the Lenovo Legion Go 2 will be coming soon, as the first device was a big success for the company and the potential for this format is outstanding. Chong said they are actively developing new solutions and focusing on existing engineering to deliver the most optimal handheld PC possible.
“We are still spending a lot of resources improving the current Legion Go over the last 6 months since launch. We have unlocked a lot more experiences from day one to now, and there are still engineering efforts to try and bring the next wave of features to the product. It’s definitely a product category that we see potential in and we’re continuing to invest and we’re looking towards when the time is right, of course, to have the next generation to provide even more features,” Chong said.
He didn’t give any more details on what hardware the Lenovo Legion Go 2 will have, but it should be on a similar (same) level as the next version of the Asus ROG Ally. Lenovo’s device sells well in the Asia-Pacific region and has a dominant position there. Therefore, it is not surprising that the Chinese company does not want to leave the market to reach more consumers with the brand.
It is unlikely that Lenovo will build on Intel Core Ultra foundations, as seeing the results of the MSI Claw, it would probably find it difficult to gain market share. Therefore, the company will look to AMD’s APU, and by then Lenovo could be offering Strix Point APU-equipped portable PCs at who knows how competitive a price.
