MOVIE NEWS – The new horror film Abigail looks promising, in which a kidnapped underage ballerina (Alisha Weir) turns out to be a vampire and no one is safe from her. The production, which stands at 85 percent on the critical portal RottenTomatoes, had a long way to go before it could hit theaters. The starting point was Universal studio’s 1936 classic, Dracula’s Daughter, in which Countess Marya Zaleska (Gloria Holden) tries to break with the blood-sucking tradition of the family, but unfortunately she does not succeed, and a drama unfolds from this situation out.
The original story went through many versions before Abigail took its final shape. At the end of the complicated process, only the basic idea remained. According to their taste, the creators organized a huge horror festival in the wake of the classic, where, despite the fixed genre, one chilling and funny surprise hits the other, and the victims deserving of a better fate are literally bathed in blood in some places.
Many critics note that the movie works perfectly, but the user experience would be even better if the viewer didn’t already know it was a vampire movie. The story starts as a traditional crime story, and the big surprise only comes (not) halfway through, when it turns out that it is actually a vampire horror. In this regard, Abigail follows in the footsteps of From Dusk to Dawn, which transitions from a gangster film to a vampire film that pushes boundaries without warning.
There is no doubt that Abigail demands a sequel, which neither the studio nor the directors – Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyaler Gillett of Radio Silence – no matter what. However, there is a small problem with this. The title character Alisha Weir, unlike her character with advanced teeth, is not immortal, so she is getting older, that is, next year she will be a 15-year-old young lady who will not exactly fit the definition of “little ballerina”. How this problem can be solved will not be revealed for so long.
