While Fallout 5 hasn’t even been announced yet (all we’re hearing is that Microsoft wants to speed up development, and Bethesda Game Studios director Todd Howard promises to speed things up), there’s already talk of where it might take place.
The Fallout Amazon series is a huge hit, and we can look forward to season two. But what about the games in the meantime? Fallout 76 is an online multiplayer title, but beyond that, the last single-player experience that was a AAA title and not a mobile port was released in 2015 (Fallout 4). So we need something new, and seeing Microsoft’s excitement, on the one hand, the Redmond-based tech giant could already be planning who to develop it for (we already made a suggestion, and with Fallout: New Vegas, they already have experience: Obsidian Entertainment), and on the other hand, a decision could be made on the location of the yet-to-be-announced game.
In 2022, Howard told IGN that The Elder Scrolls VI is in the pre-production phase of development, followed by Fallout 5, so if it were up to Bethesda Game Studios, we’d have to wait at least 7-8 years for the game to be released. And that’s not what Microsoft wants. In Fallout 4, Kellogg’s speech would lead you to believe that the new game could be set in San Francisco, and the TV series is set in the state of California, so they’re probably going back to the New California Republic (NCR).
Jonathan Nolan, the show’s producer, has already confirmed that some things in the show’s storyline have had to be fine-tuned so that they don’t clash with Howard’s vision. The location may still change, but it’s important to emphasize where it takes place because it sets the mood. Bethesda has already decided on the location, but it is not specific to a city or town yet, but it is specific to a region.
The whole thing could be thrown into turmoil if Microsoft takes development out of BGS’s hands, and there is every chance of that with Redmond in charge…
