PlayStation Introduces QR Code Invites

Sony has unveiled an innovation that makes it easier for players to join a team without having to navigate through their console.

The company has announced an update that will make it easier to invite other players to join a multiplayer party. Sony announced the details on the PlayStation Blog. Instead of sending them a link (or an invitation via our PlayStation 5), the technology is simpler than that – you can send a QR code to the player you want to invite, and they can scan it with their mobile phone and instantly join the community you invited them to. These QR codes can also be shared via third party apps, so you can send them via WhatsApp or iMessage, but of course you can also share them on social platforms.

“Like so many PlayStation fans, our team loves to play online and we’re passionate about making it easier for you to connect with other players and make new friends while you play. Today, we’re excited to announce that in the coming months, you’ll be able to create a shareable link on your PlayStation 5 or PlayStation App and send it to other PS5 players via any messaging or social media platform. By opening the link, the recipient will be able to join your multiplayer session, even if they’re not already friends with you on PlayStation Network. For example, if you just met some new friends on your favorite social media platform, you can send them a PS5 session invite in the same chat and start playing together without having to add each other as friends on PlayStation 5. PS5 players can share a multiplayer session invite on any social platform using the PlayStation App or by scanning a QR code on their console.

This feature is designed to complement existing methods of joining a session from within a PlayStation 5 game and is consistent across all supported PS5 games. As this is new technology, a small percentage of PS5 games may require an update to ensure that session joining works seamlessly. We’re working with our development partners to find the best solutions for these games. We’ve also developed a unique widget for PlayStation 5 session invites shared on Discord. The widget will dynamically update to show the status of the multiplayer session, so you’ll know if the session is still active before you join. In the coming months, we’ll also be introducing the ability to share your or another player’s PlayStation Network profile on any messaging or social app by generating a link from the PlayStation app, PlayStation 5 or your web profile on PlayStation.com,” Sony wrote.

Not a bad idea.
