Resident Evil 9: Will a Fan Favorite be the Protagonist?

Capcom hasn’t even announced the next big Resident Evil episode yet, but there are already plenty of rumors about it, so the Japanese company doesn’t have many surprises up its sleeve.

It’s been three years since the release of Resident Evil: Village, also known as Resident Evil 8. The cross-generational game brought the Winters family story to a close, which was really wrapped up with the Shadows of Rose DLC, in which Rose (now a teenager) brought the story to a close. We’ve already heard that Resident Evil 9 is in the works, but so far there hasn’t been much word on who the main character will be. Ethan Winters is out, as he sacrifices himself at the end of the Village (he does show up in Shadows of Rose, but not “physically”).

This popped up on Twitter courtesy of @PRE_Alarabiya. It’s not Chris Redfield (although he played a major role in Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, especially its Not A Hero DLC, and Resident Evil: Village), it’s not his sister Claire (although she should not be neglected), and it’s not Jill Valentine (she hasn’t been in the story since Resident Evil 5!). It will be Leon S. Kennedy, which is understandable since he appeared in both Resident Evil 2 Remake and Resident Evil 4 Remake, so he’s a “fresh face” for fans.

Capcom has reportedly been developing the game for several years, so Resident Evil 9 could have a big budget, which suggests that it could use the already announced but not yet used next generation RE engine, RE neXt (REX). This in turn will probably leave PlayStation 4 out of the target platforms, so the game could be made for PlayStation 5, Xbox series and PC, which Capcom could announce this summer, and is rumored to reach the public in early 2025, in the first quarter, to have a positive impact on the current fiscal year of the Japanese company.

But this is far from official information.
