The developers of Total War would continue to work on this IP, but rumors suggest that the studio’s game would draw from Star Wars content, as it would work from the sci-fi license.
According to DualShockers, as of last October, a little over six months ago, the SEGA-owned studio was working on three Total Wars games. One of them was Total War: Star Wars. It’s not clear if the other two were any closer to completion, but we’ve gotten used to seeing a Total War episode basically every year. The only exceptions were two years, 2014 and 2021. The most recent release was Total War: Pharaoh in 2023, produced by Creative Assembly’s Sofia studio.
Creative Assembly is based in Sussex, UK. In the strategy genre, the team’s name is quite strong, but in 2014 they made a big exception, which is still considered an excellent game, as they also made Alien Isolation. In addition to the Sussex-Sofia axis, they have a third studio, also in the UK (Newcastle), which opened last year and is working on an unannounced project.
They also made a multiplayer shooter game, Hyenas, which was canceled by SEGA in September, leading to cutbacks at Creative Assembly, which then announced that it would focus on the genres it knows best: “Simply put, Creative Assembly was good at offline games in the RTS genre, but they took on the challenge of developing Hyenas, an online game in the FPS genre. While the game itself was good, we decided to discontinue development of Hyenas because we did not think it would reach a quality that would satisfy our users when we considered whether we could really run it as a competitive online game for a long period of time. As part of the process of structural reform underway at Creative Assembly, we intend to optimize their workflow and focus their resources on the development of their specialty genres,” said Sega Sammy CEO Haruki Satomi.
We’ll see if there really is a Star Wars strategy in the works.
