We’re learning more and more about Capcom’s plans, and it looks like the Japanese company really isn’t going to miss out on the first Resident Evil, although in this case there was already a remake released in 2015 that was upgraded to HD.
While Resident Evil 2, 3, and 4 have all been remastered using the RE engine, the HD remaster of the first Resident Evil has yet to do so, as it was essentially a face-lifted GameCube game that originally saw the light of day in 2002. It’s no surprise that the team will be touching up the first game, and BioHazard Declassified has released more details on Twitter.
The game is currently called Biohazard: RE 1 (we think the colon is after RE… and it will be the Japanese title), and the gameplay will be slower than the Resident Evil 2 Remake. Each of the zombies will have a unique model, as there are not as many enemies in the game, and they will all be “tankier”, meaning you will have to put more bullets into them to eventually take them down. The Crimson Head enemy type (a zombie that continues to mutate with the T-virus) will also appear. The lore will be much more fleshed out by Capcom, who will also be using a different third-person camera. (We think this means they won’t be using fixed camera angles, but the behind-the-shoulder one we saw in the Resident Evil 4 Remake).

The pre-rendered backgrounds seen in the GameCube remake will not be used in the Resident Evil 1 Remake. Each room will have its background assets (such as models) preloaded, and then the other assets will be loaded when you open the door, so it’s rumored that the lighting and visuals will be greatly improved. This will probably be helped by the next generation of the RE engine, RE neXt (REX). And Dusk Golem has also confirmed that the game is in development and will be released in 2026, adding that some of the information is true (such as the third-person camera).
None of this is official yet.
