MSI Claw: Slowly Catching up to the AMD Machines

STEAM DECK NEWS – MSI, unlike the others, is not using AMD’s Ryzen APU, and with Intel Core Ultra foundations in their infancy, it has a lot of catching up to do.

However, it is doing so at an enormous rate of knots. A new BIOS was released by MSI in April, delivering up to 150% more performance, and there were also significant optimizations in several games, as Intel Arc drivers were beefed up. Now here’s another system software update that MSI says could bring up to 30% improvement. BIOS 109 (its full name is E1T41IMS.109 BIOS…) updates MSI Center M to 1.0.2405.1401. According to the company, you can install it directly on your handheld PC using the Live Update feature, so you don’t have to download the BIOS separately. MSI Center M is useful because it notifies you of future updates in the Notifications tab, so you don’t have to hunt for them.

Forza Horizon 5 has a performance increase of around 30%, Sons of the Forest 23%, Fortnite 28%, Helldivers 2 20%, EA Sports FC 24 15.5% and Hogwarts Legacy 12.9%, and MSI is proud to announce that the 100 most played titles on Steam run perfectly on the Claw after installing the new BIOS. The company is now so confident that it’s also comparing performance with Asus’ ROG Ally, so we can see Intel and AMD results side by side (since Asus’ device, like the Steam Deck, is AMD-based).

According to the latest performance figures, the MSI Claw performs on average 26% better than the Asus ROG Ally with AMD Ryzen Z1. MSI hasn’t said what the power consumption is (which can be astonishingly high for Intel in some cases!) or how long you can use the battery before it’s drained, but MSI has said what to use for the best gaming experience. Turn on the Extreme Performance preset and Over Boost, select 1920×1080 resolution and low graphics detail in the game, and for XeSS upscaling (if available) use the Performance option with V-Sync and FPS limit turned off.

So MSI and Intel are really starting to fight back, although Asus will soon come out with the ROG Ally X, which will have the Z1 Extreme chip instead of the base model…
