Assassin’s Creed Shadows: the LGBTQIA+ Romance Has Totally Freaked out Some Players!

Although Ubisoft’s game has not even been released yet (it is still a few months away), the public has already found something in it that they find unacceptable, even though it is something that is optional and not mandatory.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows is going to change some things, which might seem strange because the previous installment of the franchise, Assassin’s Creed: Mirage, returned to the level of quality and style that the franchise had reached around 2007-2009. The new installment will have the potential for romance, but probably not to the same depth as, say, Mass Effect (and yes, we’re mentioning Mass Effect: Andromeda here).

Historically, the criticism is understandable, as Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set in feudal Japan, and LGBTQIA+ romance didn’t really exist at the time, whereas Ubisoft’s game will allow for it. This has been criticized by gamers (as well as the possibility of romance itself, as no Assassin’s Creed has ever had it), who say it’s a “woke” move by the French publisher. This romance talk has been confirmed by Ubisoft on their website: “Romantically, they [Naoe and Yasuke] will also attract and be attracted to different types of people.

Some people pointed out that there were already LGBTQIA+ characters in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, but they still called Ubisoft “activists”, who were also criticized for not being able to kill people in masses in Assassin’s Creed Shadows (since stealth will be an essential part of the gameplay, and therefore it wouldn’t help the two main characters if they left bodies in masses…).

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be a current-gen game, so don’t expect it to be a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One port. Instead, it will be released on November 15th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC and Mac. PC gamers will definitely have an extra bump on their necks with the Denuvo DRM, and don’t look too hard for the game on Steam, as you’ll be able to find it on Ubisoft Connect and the Epic Games Store.
