Looking at CD Projekt RED’s track record, the Polish company takes an average of 4-5 years to release new titles. They want to change this trend now…
The future of CD Projekt RED looks very promising, considering all the Polish company’s upcoming projects. There are exciting titles in the works, such as The Witcher 4, a sequel to Cyberpunk 2077, a spin-off of The Witcher, a new IP, and more. However, the question lingers in the minds of many players: “When will we see CD Projekt RED’s next game?”. The short answer is that we have to wait years. However, the company has clarified that it wants to be more efficient and productive.
As we first read in VGC, CD Projekt RED wants to release games more often, which is very difficult these days considering the development schedule of AAA titles.
Considering CD Projekt RED’s achievements so far, the Polish company needs an average of 4-5 years to release new titles (not including expansions). So the list is: The Witcher (2007), The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings (2011), The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt (2025) and Cyberpunk 2077 (2020).
That’s why CDPR answered an investor question on its last fiscal quarter shareholder call about whether they can focus on more than two projects simultaneously. The company responded as follows: “We already worked on two projects at the same time when we worked on [Cyberpunk 2077 DLC] Phantom Liberty because that was a game-sized project with almost 300 people working on it,” – explained Michał Nowakowski, joint CEO of CD Projekt.
“And we are working on more than one project at this time as well. There is Cyberpunk 2 being developed in Boston, there is Polaris being developed predominantly here in Europe, and obviously we have other projects, with other teams like Project Sirius, also in Boston with The Molasses Flood,” he says.
Nowakowski went on to explain that they want to release more titles, and significantly more often.
“And there is The Witcher 1 remake done in cooperation with Canis Majoris, so you can definitely expect us to release more titles and the cadence of launches is something we definitely plan to increase, although I will obviously not comment on what is the space between the projects time wise” – concludes the company’s CEO.
How are the CD Projekt RED projects now?
As we can see in the tweet below, The Witcher 4 has more than 400 developers working on it at the moment. The spin-off game has nearly 40 people. CDPR announced months ago that they plan to start production of Polaris in the second half of the year. Regarding financial results, the company is pleased with the strong performance of the Phantom Liberty. As a result, they made over $25 million in profits last quarter, an increase of over 44% over the previous year.
“I am so excited by all this growth and cannot wait to see how it all develops,” Pawel Sasko, director of the Cyberpunk 2077 sequel, said on his X/Twitter account.
In addition, large investments are expected in connection with the upcoming projects of the Polish company. CD Projekt seems to be focusing mainly on The Witcher 4 (Polaris) at the moment, which is the new protagonist of the franchise and which will start a new trilogy in the fantasy universe created by Andrzej Sapkowski.
