The next installment of id Software’s legendary IP has been leaked, although we still don’t know exactly what the plans might be regarding a specific cheat brand…
Tom Henderson reported on Insider Gaming that the next DOOM installment has been in development for four years. Since DOOM Eternal will be released in spring 2020, this makes sense. According to the site, the game will take place in a medieval-inspired world. But what is this IDKFA that Bethesda has trademarked? It’s one of the well-known cheats, and as soon as it popped up, we suspected it was related to the new game. But in Microsoft’s leaked schedule, we saw the game as DOOM: Year Zero. Henderson says that was just a temporary placeholder name.
In an interview with Polygon in 2021, DOOM Eternal director Hugo Martin was asked if id Software could come up with a story where the Doom Slayer first encounters the Sentinels in a medieval fantasy setting. Well, that’s why the rumor that just surfaced seems credible, but the game is now called DOOM: The Dark Ages! In the same interview, Martin also pointed out that the two add-ons to DOOM Eternal, The Ancient Gods Parts 1 and 2, have already outlined the future direction of the series. According to him, the Doom Slayer is immortal, so they can do whatever story they want with her.
Meanwhile, id Software may be working on another IP. When MachineGames unveiled Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, the video showed a studio sign with a Quake logo on it, a reference to Quake 6. Since the remasters of the first two Quake games were well received by the public, the IP is not only known to older gamers, so Microsoft could build on this franchise, even if the free-to-play Quake Champions was not a big hit…
None of this is official yet.
