PlayStation’s New Boss Excited about Their Mobile Games

There will be a new head of Sony Interactive Entertainment in a very short time (hours, really), and he’s eager to see the PlayStation brand expand into mobile gaming.

Sony continues to say that the sequels to their bigger single-player titles should be played on console first (so much for a more aggressive multiplatform strategy then…?), and in the meantime mobile expansion hasn’t been left behind. Apple, Kabam, Meta, Tencent, Super Evil Megacorp, Samsung, Niantic, Zynga, Riot have all signed up with Sony, and a job ad suggests that the company is creating a new mobile platform where free-to-play mobile games will be available… but last year two of them left within weeks of each other (Michaeil Katkoff, formerly of Rovio and Zynga; Nicola Sebastini, formerly head of Apple Arcade).

Hermen Hulst, who is now head of PlayStation Studios but will become co-CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment tomorrow, said as much at a business meeting about mobile expansion: “On mobile, we have worked hard to build a very strong, very experienced core mobile team. We are really excited about extending our experience to new audiences in the mobile space. We’re taking a little bit more of a measured approach compared to the more aggressive approach you’ve seen on PC. This is because PC is obviously closer to the core of our development than mobile.

That said, we’re taking a strategic approach in terms of working with some of the leading companies in the space. We’re working with different partners like NCSoft, and we’re learning a lot from those collaborations. And finally, we’re very excited about the upcoming title releases that we can share in the future,” said Hulst.

Back in November, we heard that Sony Interactive Entertainment and NCSoft had entered into a strategic partnership agreement to collaborate on multiple business areas, including mobile. We heard this a year after Sony and NCSoft reportedly were developing an MMORPG out of the Horizon IP…

Still, she likes puzzle and story-oriented games, like Sherlock Holmes: Crimes & Punishments, which is her favourite title. She also played The Sims 3, but after accidentally killing a whole sim family, swore not to play it again. (For our office address, email and phone number check out our IMPRESSUM)
