Dragon Quest HD-2D Trilogy: Has the Website been Leaked?

Not only is Square Enix doing a classic-style modernization of the first six Final Fantasy episodes, they are also doing the same with another franchise (that started BEFORE FF).

Dragon Quest started in 1986 and has had 11 main episodes, a ton of spin-offs and remakes over the last nearly four decades. One of the new projects is the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake, announced for 2021. It uses the same art style as Octopath Traveler. The long silence was broken by Square Enix announcing the target platforms, and leaks suggest that the Japanese publisher is planning to modernize not only the third episode, but also the first and second, so Square Enix could come up with a trilogy.

This was reported on Twitter by Midori, a leaker of games mainly from SEGA and Atlus, who revealed that Square Enix had registered a domain for Dragon Quest HD-2D on April 24. The website is up and running, but empty, so the registration wasn’t a fake. Why the silence about Dragon Quest HD-2D? Midori thinks that anyone who thinks that the development into a trilogy is the reason for the years of silence is right.

Previously, the insider said that the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake was delayed because Square Enix was thinking in terms of a trilogy, and Square Enix released a drawing of Erdrick’s symbol at the end of May, showing the logo of the franchise’s games, not the third installment. Since the first three Dragon Quest games are connected in time and setting (DQ3 is a prequel to the first two), it would be logical to think in terms of a trilogy.

The pixel remasters of Final Fantasy I-VI were well received, as the old pixelated sprite style was translated to modern platforms in an excellent way, so it makes sense to do a similar project for Dragon Quest. But that’s just a rumor.
