Will the First Halo Get a Remaster and Become Multiplatform?

An interesting rumor has surfaced about Halo: Combat Evolved, and it could break a tradition that has lasted for over two decades.

The Xbox Games Showcase is coming up this weekend, and we’ve reported on it several times at the rumor level. Add to that list what we’re about to discuss. Microsoft’s list of multiplatform titles is said to be expanding (and in the case of Sea of Thieves, it’s a welcome addition for the Redmond-based giant), but not with the first game you’d expect.

Tom Warren, editor of The Verge, claims that Microsoft will unveil two major first-party titles in coverage starting at 10 AM PT on Sunday. DOOM: The Dark Ages from id Software and Gears 6 from The Coalition will be announced, and Warren says that Gears of War will still not be multiplatform, but its new story Doom Slayer will be (DOOM Eternal and the 2016 DOOM reboot were both released for Sony and Microsoft consoles).

Microsoft’s multiplatform concept is called Project Latitude, and in addition to DOOM: The Dark Ages, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition, Age of Mythology: Retold, and even Starfield are being considered for multiplatform release. Gears 6, the Fable reboot, and South of Midnight are also not planned for PlayStation 5. Warren says a remaster of the first Halo is also in the works, but Microsoft is planning a multiplatform release for the first Halo. Master Chief on PlayStation? That could happen, and it could be a test to gauge interest, and if the numbers are good, more episodes could be ported elsewhere later.

The first part of Halo has already been revisited in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, so it’s a little odd that 343 Industries would go back to the beginning of the franchise. Anyway, it’s not official yet, and the Xbox Games Showcase is on Sunday, so everything could be revealed soon.
