But don’t expect Riot’s game to get full cross-play support, as it’s already been rejected, so PC and console players won’t be able to play together.
At Summer Game Fest, Riot announced that Valorant, a free-to-play 5v5 team-based first-person shooter, will be coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. There will also be a beta starting June 12 in the US, Canada, UK, Europe, Japan, and possibly other regions later. The game, which was released on PC four years ago in June 2020, will not offer cross-play with the console versions, but it will offer cross-progression, meaning that inventory and in-game achievements can be moved between platforms. Both PC and console players will receive patch balances, new characters, maps, premium (paid) content, and additional live service features.
“When considering whether to bring Valorant to additional platforms, we knew we had to be able to offer the same uncompromising, competitive experience we’ve been providing PC players for years: a precise, team-based, tactical shooter. We were adamant that Valorant’s core competitive gameplay had to feel natural on a controller; and – if we couldn’t deliver on that gameplay promise – we had to be prepared to walk away from it. We hope we got it right, but ultimately our players will have the final say,” said Arnar Gylfason, Valorant’s Production Director.
In a developer diary, Riot also talked about the process of porting Valorant from PC to console: “Valorant is a very mouse-driven game. It requires a lot of dexterity. One of the things we really focused on when we were trying to make the game feel really good on the controller was managing the limitations of trying to move through the environment as fast as you can with the right stick, but you also have to be hyper-accurate. Being able to do both of those things with one stick is a very challenging problem. When we first got our hands on Valorant on the console, it was a very different experience than it is now. It was a bit clunky. We needed something that made it easier for players to slow down and focus on firefights when they needed to. I think our move to what we call a focus mode was a big turning point for us. It’s kind of like the button you press before you go into a fight. Your sensitivity goes down, you zoom in, you get precise. You should feel like you’re about to be precise when you’re trying to hit that really long shot.
So Valorant is coming soon to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series.
