Assassin’s Creed Shadows: Why did the Executive Producer Ignore Elon Musk’s tweet?

Marc-Alexis Côté would have responded to the Twitter owner’s comments, but he backed down, and maybe it’s for the best.

Côté spoke with Stephen Totilo, the man behind Game File, about what Elon Musk wrote on Twitter. In Assassin’s Creed Shadows, one of the main characters, Yasuke, is darker-skinned (so he’s not exactly of Japanese descent), to which Elon Musk wrote that diversity, equality and inclusion (DEI) is killing art. To which Côté came close to responding, but didn’t…

“That tweet stirred up emotions… the first thing I wanted to do was go back to Twitter (which I had deleted) and just tweet back. And I just took a step back. I have a mindfulness app on my phone. And I did a little bit of mindfulness to try to explore the emotions that that tweet created. For me, Elon, it’s sad, he’s just feeding the hate. I had a lot of three-word responses that came to mind. Attacking someone like Elon is not going to convince people of our point of view as a team.

We have a super mysterious historical figure that not much is known about. And for us, that was what we wanted in Assassin’s Creed. What Elon says is not the game we’re making. People have to play the game for themselves. And if they’re not convinced within the first 11 minutes and 47 seconds of what we’re doing, then we can have that discussion. I was reviewing the game recently and I thought, “The answer is there! I just hope and wish that people can keep an open mind and see the game for what it is. It’s an Assassin’s Creed game, and I think it’s the best one we’ve ever made,” said Côté.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be released on November 15th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PC, Mac and iPad. We recently wrote about the game and how it won’t have a huge area to cover, but it’s often true that less is more. Especially here.
