Team Asobi’s studio head says that if the quality of the game is right, anything is possible, so he wouldn’t rule out the possibility of the Astro IP appearing beyond PlayStation in the future.
Astro’s Playroom comes standard on all PlayStation 5s, as the pre-installed game is a sort of tech demo for new buyers of the console. Astro’s Bot, on the other hand, will be a full-fledged game that Sony says will feature over 150 VIP bots celebrating three decades of PlayStation history. (We’re curious to see how far back they go, or will we just see the blockbuster franchises of the last decade?)
Nicolas Doucet, studio head at Team Asobi, says they have a flexible IP that can stand on its own two feet: “When we started this game, we had discussions about whether or not we should lean on PlayStation. There were different opinions, with some questioning whether we should fly on our own wings and not be held back, but actually we decided it was the case that we were already doing that, but then adding this layer of PlayStation because we can – and why not?
That was our attitude. In the future, if we had an adventure that was all Astro and PlayStation wasn’t a part of it, I don’t think that would be a problem. As long as the core elements and qualities of the game are great, I think anything is possible. It’s a very flexible IP and that’s one of the things I love about it. We approached it with a light heart, we didn’t write a backstory, we don’t care too much about the details, except for the design of the character, which has to be respected. The rest is really up in the air, and thanks to that, we can feel pretty relaxed about where it’s going next,” Doucet said.
Whatever it is, one thing is for sure: Astro Bot is coming to PlayStation 5 on September 6. Perhaps Team Asobi’s game will be multiplatform? Is Doucet quietly hyping Sony’s multiplatform expansion? Considering Microsoft’s similar approach, it would not be surprising.
