Will There be Two Protagonists in Resident Evil 9? [VIDEO]

This time we hear from a German leaker (Screenfire’s German site editor Andi) about what Capcom is working on.

According to Dusk Golem, Andi (who was only named as a foreign leaker) was the first person to talk about the planned remake of Resident Evil 0 and Resident Evil Code Veronica, months before him and IGN, and his source is supposedly a Capcom employee he developed a good relationship with during one of the Gamescoms (since it’s in Cologne, it’s only right that Andi went there). All information comes from a German YouTube stream, which was translated on Twitter.

According to Andi, Resident Evil 9 will have TWO main characters: not only Leon, but also Jill will appear in the game and will have a similar role as Sheva had in Resident Evil 5. It won’t be a full open world, it will just have elements like Resident Evil: Village and Resident Evil 4 Remake. It was originally planned as a co-op game, but after Resident Evil 7: Biohazard and Resident Evil: Village were both successful single-player games, Capcom may have reconsidered, but the Japanese publisher also considered removing Jill from the project. However, they felt that it wouldn’t be fair to do it again after her very minor role in Resident Evil 5. Andi says that she is still in the game as a main character, but in terms of gameplay, she doesn’t know how.

If it continues to be co-op, we don’t know how Capcom has planned it. Either like in Resident Evil 5 and 6, or like in Resident Evil 0, where you could switch between the two main characters… or there could be a separate campaign for the two characters. Andi doesn’t know who else will play supporting roles in the game, but she suspects that Ada will play the role of Leon and Barry will play the role of Jill. She says that Resident Evil 9 will not focus on the Blue Umbrella, nor will it deal with the BSAA cliffhanger seen in Resident Evil: Village (if the latter is addressed, it will have a small role in the game). The game will have a third-person perspective, but like The Evil Within 2, it may have a first-person perspective later on. The enemies will be zombies, but they will be faster and more aggressive, because in their old form they would no longer be a threat to Jill and Leon.

According to Andi, Chris, Jill, Leon, and Claire will not be in danger, but the others (Barry, Rebecca, or even Ada) might die in the course of the story. Barry might also appear in Resident Evil 9. Resident Evil 5 Remake was in the pre-production phase of development, but until Capcom can resolve the racism issue, they put the project on hold. The Japanese company was also waiting for a partner for Resident Evil 6 Remake, but since no one is willing to do it, it has probably been canceled and will never happen. Each team and director has a free hand, so the story and cliffhangers of the previous game don’t tie their hands. They can tell their story with their dream character of choice, and that’s why there are so many unresolved cliffhangers and one-off characters, and characters like Sheva or Helena are unlikely to return for that very reason.

Andi (his is the first video, but it’s in German) tries to be transparent about what she knows and doesn’t know. Opposite to him in the second video another person, Bawkbasoup, also talks about Resident Evil 9, but he says it’s an open world game with Jill in the main role, and he’s been saying that for a year… but Andi says much more, although nothing is official here.
