Tim Cain, the man in charge of Fallout, would probably ask a tough question that would be hard to answer in a way that he would like.
The Fallout series has been a success (they wouldn’t have ordered a second season if it wasn’t), so it’s no wonder that the question of when we can expect Fallout 5 is a common one these days. Tim Cain, lead developer on the first Fallout, took to YouTube to talk about it. While he still cares deeply about the IP, he has not shown much inclination to return to the franchise.
Cain said, “Would I want to remake Fallout as a 3D game? Are you asking if I want to do a Fallout spin-off like Fallout: New Vegas is… Do I want to do Fallout 5? The TLDW is: Every RPG I’ve ever made offered me something new and different that made me want to make it. It was the game itself that offered me something interesting that made me go, “Oh, I want to do that, I’ve never done that before. If someone came up to me and said, “You want to make a Fallout game? My answer would be, “Well, what’s new? I didn’t even want to make Fallout 2, why would I want to make a new Fallout?”
Cain’s work can be described as eclectic, just to name a few of his games: Fallout, The Temple of Elemental Evil, South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Outer Worlds. Only once has he worked on a sequel to something that actually went anywhere: that was Fallout 2, and he left the team before it hit stores. Cain is partially retired, so whether or not he would work on this project is currently up to his own interests.
And his mentality is hard to argue with. If you’re not interested in something, don’t expect much from it, and if you’re working on something out of necessity, then the bare minimum will be produced.
