It’s a bit strange of Saber Interactive that after such a long time they decided not to give the new third-person shooter (or hack’n’slash) of the Warhammer 40,000 (or 40K) universe a public pre-release test.
Saber Interactive first opened beta signups in August 2023, so it’s been almost 11 months since the first beta. But plans slipped after Saber moved the planned release from winter 2023 to the second half of 2024 (which starts Monday). When the new release date was announced in December, the beta was reopened for the public to sign up for and play in co-op, as Saber had promised. You can still sign up on the Focus Test Zone website, but that wouldn’t make much sense.
Saber Interactive posted this on Steam: “[Warhammer 40K:] Space Marine 2 is almost finished. We are now fully focused on tweaking, polishing, and fixing the remaining issues before the September 9th launch. This means that we will not be running a public online beta, as it would distract the development teams from preparing for the full launch, and our priority is to ensure the best possible experience at launch.
Anyone who signed up for the beta before yesterday’s release of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 will receive a free limited edition Bolt Pistol skin. This is not much compensation, and already a small part of the public suspects that Saber Interactive and Focus Entertainment (the French company will be the publisher) are trying to hide how bad the game might be, and others believe that the servers won’t be able to handle the load when it is released.
Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 will be released on September 9th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and Steam. It’s a bit of a bummer that the beta is being canceled two months before the game’s release.
