What is Nintendo’s Position on Artificial Intelligence? The CEO Answers!

Shuntaro Furukawa explains his views on artificial intelligence, which is slowly starting to be adopted more widely by the gaming industry.

Nintendo has acknowledged that generative AI (which can be used for content creation) is a hot topic and could lead to technological developments, but for now the Japanese company only plans to create unique value that can be tied to the big N and cannot be created with technology alone.

During a Q&A session with investors, Nintendo CEO Satoru Furukawa elaborated on the topic. He is cautious about AI technology because of intellectual property issues, but he is confident in what the Japanese company has, as Nintendo has decades of experience in creating optimal gaming experiences.

“In the gaming industry, AI-like technology has long been used to control the movements of enemy characters, so game development and AI technology have always been closely related. Generative AI, which has been a hot topic in recent years, can be more creative, but we also recognize that it has intellectual property issues. Our company has decades of experience in creating optimal gaming experiences for our customers. While we are flexible in responding to technological developments, we hope to continue to deliver value that is unique to us and cannot be created by technology alone,” Furukawa said.

Let’s just hope the Japanese company doesn’t start using artificial intelligence to identify what it considers serious violations. We’re not talking about the two Switch pirates (those were in yesterday’s news), but the fan games that are made on a non-profit model, so there’s no financial benefit to the developer. In fact, the big N may be overprotective of its IPs, with the result that more than one fan game has ended up unfinished.

At least the company’s approach to AI is not to start using it for game development as soon as possible, so in this case their old-fashioned approach is to be appreciated.
