Dragon Age: The Veilguard: Why can’t we Use Blood Magic?

BioWare’s lead writer has explained why Dragon Age 4 will not have this magic, as only NPCs will be able to use it.

If you choose a Mage as your character (Rook will be the name), you will not be able to evolve them into a Blood Mage. You can become a Death Caller (Necromancer), a Spellblade (magic-enhanced melee), or an Evoker (elemental, fire, ice, lightning spells). Blood Magic is not included, although it was available in Dragon Age: Origins and Dragon Age II. It’s also missing from the fourth installment, and BioWare initially explained this by saying that the Rook would get much better options in the game.

Now, however, Patrick Weekes, BioWare’s lead writer who took over from David Gaider as head of the Dragon Age franchise, has explained it in more detail: “Blood Magic is unlikely (even in future games for player characters) because we’ve changed it from a power boost to really being the key to a lot of nasty things that we don’t want the heroes to do. I think it can be ethically neutral if you only use your own blood, but after seeing it used as a necessary part of mind control and demon binding in Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age Inquisition, it’s just not a path we want the hero to go down right now.”

Blood Magic requires blood, in exchange for which you can cast some pretty powerful spells (like mind control or summoning demons). Based on the history of the Dragon Age franchise, most of Thedas was conquered by the Tenviter Empire using Blood Magic, but it’s no longer recommended (especially officially). But something else might be possible instead, Weekes added: “‘Use your health to cast more spells’ is a fun gameplay twist for people who like that kind of risk/reward playstyle. We may find other ways to do that. Just not Blood Magic for the hero for now.”

Dragon Age: The Veilguard will be available this fall for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC.
