Star Wars Outlaws: You Won’t Climb Towers in it!

Massive Entertainment’s next game is only a month and a half away from release, so it’s no wonder that the marketing push is on…

Star Wars Outlaws will be the first truly open-world game in the universe created by George Lucas. Given that publisher (and studio owner) Ubisoft often uses the same formula in its games (Far Cry, Assassin’s Creed…), one could legitimately ask: will we see the same approach here, or can we expect a different experience? Julian Gerighty, director of Star Wars Outlaws, spoke about this in an interview with Gamesindustry:

“We are very conscious of the Ubisoft house style. Massive was always different. The Division and The Division 2 were different. Originally Massive was an independent studio, then an Activision studio, so it has always thought very differently. The DNA of Massive is very unique to Ubisoft. But there are so many great lessons to be learned from the Ubisoft way of making games. And Star Wars itself suggested some different ways of doing things. Let me give you one example. Instead of having a skill tree and an upgrade tree like a traditional game, you go to experts to create this Padawan/Master relationship in the world that leads you on adventures to upgrade your character. Everything is rooted in the people and the world,” Gerigthy said.

So don’t expect to climb towers on planets to clear the fog on your map. Instead, our protagonist, Kay Vess, will be able to eavesdrop on NPCs or ask them directly for information about missions and activities. The planets will also be full of life, so there will often be dynamic events, such as the Empire arresting some civilians or two criminal gangs fighting each other. It’s no coincidence that we wrote earlier that Massive has chosen quality over quantity, even though the side missions are about the same length as the main story.

Star Wars Outlaws will be released on August 30th for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series and PC.
