Charlize Theron Praises the New Furiosa Film: “It’s Beautiful”

MOVIE NEWS – Charlize Theron praised Furiosa, connecting her character’s legacy in a prequel saga. The movie answers questions about the mysterious Furiosa, showcasing her violent revenge story and character development.

Charlize Theron, the Hollywood star who played a crucial role in Mad Max: Fury Road, has finally shared her thoughts on George Miller’s prequel movie. Released in May 2024, the fifth movie in the Mad Max franchise received decent box office reception but was not profitable enough. During the annual Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project event, the star confirmed she has seen the new film and said:

“It’s amazing, it’s a beautiful film.”

Theron’s reaction is significant as she first brought the character to life in 2015’s Mad Max: Fury Road. After that movie became a blockbuster hit, talks of further expansion in the Mad Max universe began, leading to the development of the prequel. Naturally, since the movie is set years before Fury Road, Theron did not reprise her role. Instead, Anya Taylor-Joy took over as a younger Furiosa. In the film, she battles a warlord named Dementus, who kidnaps her as a child. Furiosa also depicts a world where Immortan Joe, the villain of Fury Road, rules part of the wasteland, with Furiosa infiltrating his workforce.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Theron elaborated on her views about Furiosa and whether she has met Taylor-Joy:

“No, we’ve really been trying to connect. It’s been one of those – we could make a comedy out of it. We keep running into each other in places where we don’t have time to really talk, so we’re constantly like, ‘Oh my god, let’s get together!’ And then life takes over. But it will happen when it’s right.”

Strengthening Furiosa’s Legacy with a Great Origin Story

Many questions that arose in Mad Max: Fury Road, which shrouded the character in mystery, are now answered in Furiosa. At its core, the film is a revenge story. Though mostly silent, Furiosa is loud in displaying her motivations. She won’t stop until she defeats the monster that made her mother suffer, doing so with the characteristic violence of the wasteland.

The film also includes a subplot that makes her more human in her quest. Praetorian Jack is Furiosa’s greatest ally and is comparable to the character she becomes as Imperator Furiosa in Fury Road. He is the rebellious pilot of the rig that makes Immortan Joe’s commercial endeavors possible. He also serves as a significant emotional driver for Furiosa’s ultimate decision to subject Dementus to a painful death. After Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, it becomes clear why the character behaves the way she does in Mad Max: Fury Road. This character “connection” is made possible with great direction, a solid script, and performances by actors who, as Theron said, still have to meet.
