Will We Wait an Eternity for Eternals 2?! Kevin Feige Discusses the Future of Marvel!

MOVIE NEWS – According to Kevin Feige, Marvel Studios has no immediate plans for Eternals 2, for now they are focusing on other priorities…

Fans who were hoping that Marvel Studios would announce Eternals 2 at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, unfortunately, shouldn’t get their hopes up too much. The Eternals was one of the first films in Marvel Studios’ Phase 4 lineup. It looked like it could revamp the Marvel Cinematic Universe. With Chloé Zhao’s directorial appointment, he’s set himself up for a potential Oscar. However, despite bringing in healthy revenues during the COVID-19 pandemic, reactions from both audiences and critics have been extremely mixed.

Three years have passed since the presentation of the Eternals. Fans of the film were hoping that Marvel Studios would move forward with a sequel after all. Especially considering both the cliffhanger ending and the two post-credits scenes that beg for a sequel. Speaking to Inverse, Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige said there are no immediate plans for a sequel. It doesn’t rule out that one day, there will be one. But right now, the studio has other priorities.

However, specific plot points of the Eternals will play a role in future Marvel Studios films.

For example, in the upcoming Captain America: Brave New World movie, as Feige’s full quote can be read below:

“There are no immediate plans for Eternals 2. There are, and I think you’ve seen maybe in a trailer we’ve released recently, an acknowledgment of some of those events. Certain giant things came out of the ocean.”

How do the Eternals return?

Captain America: Brave New World finally shows audiences what happens to the giant Celestial head sticking out of the ocean at the end of Eternals. This lingering plot point has been on fans’ list of unanswered MCU questions ever since the movie hit theatres in November 2021. Another central plot point of the Eternals was the status of Dane Whitman, played by Kit Harrington. One of the post-credits scenes hinted that he would be the Black Knight character teaming up with Blade. There were earlier rumours that the character would be part of the Blade movie. However, it has since been left out of the script after various behind-the-scenes rearrangements related to the film.

As for the Eternals themselves, there’s a good chance these characters will be put on ice for a while. Kevin Feige recently revealed that not all Phase 4 MCU characters will appear in Avengers 5. So, for the time being, we can be sure that the Eternals are off the agenda. That doesn’t mean they can’t come back. Marvel Studios has a way of bringing characters back years later.

There’s also a chance that the film’s cast will appear as supporting characters in other MCU films. Much like how the Hulk was an important MCU character despite only having one solo movie. The Hulk might be the best point of comparison, as Captain America: Brave New World is full of characters associated with the not-so-jolly green giant. In this way, the various elements of the Eternals can be adapted into another cosmic hero project. For example, it could be in Thor 5, a new Guardians of the Galaxy movie, or the upcoming Nova series. Perhaps then fans will also see the return of Harry Styles after his otherwise wasted cameo as Starfox in one of the film’s post-credits scenes…
