Mortal Kombat: Onslaught Closes After a Year: No Longer Available to Players

Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD) is cancelling another game, but considering what’s been going on at the publisher, this was somewhat expected.

The game was developed by NetherRealm Studios, and Mortal Kombat: Onslaught is a strategic, team-based, collection-oriented RPG, according to franchise co-creator and creative director Ed Boon. The free-to-download game was announced in October 2022, the same year Mortal Kombat celebrated its 30th anniversary, and released on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store a year later. This made it a mobile title available for both iOS and Android.

The story follows the fallen god Shinnok as he attempts to regain his power by collecting relics from worlds. Players must help Raiden build a team of warriors that can stop Shinnok’s plans. Except it’s no longer available for purchase on Google or Apple, and NetherRealm has taken to Twitter to announce the schedule for Mortal Kombat: Onslaught until its cancellation: “Mortal Kombat: Onslaught will be shut down on 10/21/24. The game will be removed from the App Store and Google Play on 7/22, with in-game purchases disabled on 8/23. Players will be able to enjoy the game until 10/21/24. It has been an honor to create this game for our community.”

We also say that this was expected, because a few days ago we reported that NetherRealm had shut down its mobile team, putting about fifty people out of work. So there is no one to maintain Mortal Kombat: Onslaught, and WBD has no intention of keeping the game alive. They took a little money out of it, and then the publisher is cutting their losses. Game over. The end.

So another game becomes completely unplayable. Whether it’s a mobile title or a console title, it’s not good.
