The Witcher 4: Can It Simplify Development On Unreal Engine 5? [VIDEO]

CD Projekt RED (CDPR) may be making life easier for other developers by solving a problem that many of us struggle with.

The Witcher 4, codenamed Polaris within CDPR, will be the first Witcher title to be created using Unreal Engine 5. CDPR no longer uses its own proprietary engine (REDengine), so it’s no wonder that the REDtools modding toolkit is now available to experts, which means that a lot of cut-out content could be returned to the Polish developer’s previous games (which we often cover).

However, there is a small problem with Unreal Engine 5: the engine tends to stutter in some areas. But it’s possible that CDPR’s technology change could mean that all other developers will eventually benefit from a solution the Poles can come up with to prevent this. Digital Foundry editors discuss this in the video embedded below. One of the editors, Alex Battaglia, points out that the Polish team is aware of the drawbacks of Epic Games’ technology and will try to implement a solution to overcome them.

By the way, we don’t know much about The Witcher 4 (that’s not the name of the game, we’ll just call it that for lack of a better and official name). CDPR has previously admitted (and we have reported) that it is the most advanced of the projects in development and will be the start of a new story. In some form or another, the protagonist of the first three episodes, Geralt of Rivia, will make an appearance, as a remake of the first episode is also in the works, but we know less about it (all we’ve been told is that the outdated and bad parts of the original will be cut).

So let’s hope that CDPR can find a good solution to the technological hurdles, because it will benefit everyone in the end, as it will eliminate a bug that plagues the engine in general, and Epic Games can learn from it in the future. It’s a fair win-win-win situation.
