Are the ‘Planet of the Apes’ Characters Really Not Dead After All?

MOVIE NEWS – Could it be that Raka and Proximus Caesar survived? According to the actors who played these main characters in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, this might be the case. Kevin Durand portrayed the villain Proximus in Wes Ball’s action-adventure film this summer, while Peter Macon lent his voice to Raka, the last surviving member of Caesar’s Order.

At the San Diego Comic-Con this week, both actors shared their thoughts on the apparent deaths of their characters. In an interview with Screen Rant, Macon said:

Did you see Raka die? I didn’t see him die. Did you see him die? I saw Proximus kind of fall…

Durand quickly interrupted:

I didn’t die! Shut up, Raka. ‘I didn’t see you die, but you fell from a very big height.’ Don’t say that.

Macon replied:

No, I’m saying you’ll come back strong, bro, just broken and beat up.

Set several years after the events of War for the Planet of the Apes, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes continues the saga. Ape clans have taken up residence in the oasis Caesar sought to colonize, while humans have reverted to their primal nature in their absence. Now, amidst a struggle between enslavement and freedom, outliers within the ape clans will take sides in this newly emerging society.

Durand responded:

Okay. That’s what you meant. I feel like he still believes in his ideology and the way he interpreted Caesar’s words, but I think he’s definitely been humbled. It would be very interesting to see if or when he climbs out of the water. I don’t know. I really have no idea what comes of that.

I can’t help but think there would be humility there, but I don’t know. He sees something in Noa that he’s never seen in another ape, and I think he would love to be part of that somehow… whether it be to manipulate it for his own purposes. I have no idea.

While Proximus Caesar and Raka might not have the same impact on the franchise as, say, Andy Serkis (Caesar) and Roddy McDowell — who played both Cornelius and his son Caesar on screen — Durand and Macon’s characters were charismatic and would be welcome additions to a Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes sequel.

Kevin Durand Continues to Advocate for Proximus Caesar’s Survival

San Diego Comic-Con isn’t the first time Kevin Durand has pushed for his villain in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to survive. In May, during the film’s second weekend of release, Durand suggested in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that Proximus Caesar could have survived his watery fate. Durand told THR:

Does Proximus crawl out of that ocean? You didn’t see his body. You just saw a big splash. He’s a gigantic, magnificent creature, and given the density of that beast, did he make it? I don’t know… but I think there’s a chance [Proximus survives] in Apes.

Proximus Caesar was undoubtedly a charismatic villain, helping Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes start its box office run at No. 1 in May. Wes Ball’s action-adventure film has grossed $396.7 million worldwide (according to Box Office Mojo), making Kingdom a modest financial success, while many other 2024 releases struggled in theaters.
