It wouldn’t be up to Todd McFarlane to turn the comic book character into a new game, but it’s been more than two decades since we last saw him in a game on his own.
While a movie is being made, it might be a good idea to pair it with a game. Todd McFarlane would agree. His big break came in 1988 when he worked on Batman and the Hulk as well as the Spider-Man comics. But he is best known for Spawn. McFarlane talked about this in an interview with IGN, where he emphasized that while he wants to do a new game, he’s holding back in certain categories to allow for a big, meaningful release.
Again, this could be a reference to the movie, and he also expressed that it would make sense to release the game in conjunction with a TV show or movie. Blumhouse’s King Spawn will be released sometime in 2025, and McFarlane is planning a big merchandise push to go along with it (t-shirts, key chains, that sort of thing…), and video games are also a possibility.
The first Spawn game was Todd McFarlane’s Spawn: The Video Game, a beat’em up SNES game released in 1995. This was followed in 1997 by a sub-par PS1 brawler, Spawn: The Eternal. In 1999, Spawn came to the Game Boy Color, and in 2000, the SEGA Dreamcast got Spawn: In the Demon’s Hand in addition to the arcade version. In 2002, he made a guest appearance in Soulcalibur 2 on Xbox only, Spawn: Armageddon came to PS2 in 2003, and from there it was all guest appearances. In 2013, he was featured in Soulcalibur II HD Online (PS3, Xbox 360), Mortal Kombat 11 (PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PC) in 2019, and this year he’s guest starring in Mortal Kombat Mobile (iOS/Android).
McFarlane says he needs to “pop the comic book balloon” to appeal to a larger international audience. He cited the example of The Walking Dead, which began as a comic book in 2003 at Image Comics, but was turned into a series by AMC in 2010…
