Constantine: A Very Controversial “Christian-Insulting” Scene Had to Be Cut!

MOVIE NEWS – Fans are eagerly awaiting the return of Keanu Reeves as Constantine, with the long-anticipated sequel now appearing very likely to move into production. Although the story involving demons and Judeo-Christian mythology contains many controversial moments, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that one particular scene had to be cut by Warner Bros. because it was deemed too extreme.

Di Bonaventura attended this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, where he spoke with ComicBook.com about the movie’s production and its enduring popularity among fans. Reflecting on the development of Constantine, he recalled a specific scene that the studio requested to be removed from the script. He said:

“Peter Stormare is the greatest devil ever. We debated something that would have, I think, had people completely boycotting theaters… we talked about putting the crown of thorns on Satan, and I think every Christian would have stormed the gates of the theater, so we didn’t. I think the white suit and the tar dripping – that right there made it work.”

There were certainly enough moments in the movie to stir controversy without this inclusion, but as times have changed and movies and TV shows push boundaries more than ever, whether Constantine 2 will face similar restrictions remains to be seen.

PREVIEW - Constantine 2 is officially happening, with Keanu Reeves to star again as the titular DC Comics hero. Here's what we know so far!

Constantine 2 is Finally Becoming a Reality

Fans have felt like they’ve been waiting a lifetime for a sequel to Constantine to finally get its act together and move forward with a script. After many false starts, it seemed like this was one sequel that just wasn’t meant to be, at least not with Keanu Reeves’ version of the character.

But after other Constantine projects, including a Justice League Dark project and a TV show, have fallen by the wayside, the original plan to bring back the fan favorite is back on track, and this time it looks like it’s going to stick. Di Bonaventura recently shared an update on the status of the sequel, which has a script that is “not that far away” from completion. In the same interview, the producer said:

“The script is being written right now, and it’s not that far away. I mean, we’ve got to get a good script, but we’re starting great because the movie star that everybody wants to be in business with wants to be this character again. So, there’s a lot of room in that franchise to do the kind of soul-searching, crazy, quasi-religious stuff that made the first movie so satisfying.”
