According to Gearbox, the fantasy spin-off was bigger than the first Borderlands, and they should build on that; since the company is now under Take-Two, they might even provide a small amount of money for it.
At the time Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands was released, Gearbox’s Randy Pitchford said that a new franchise might be in the works. This is likely to happen, as Pitchford told GamesRadar at San Diego Comic-Con: “What we showed with the first Wonderlands game was that there was something there. It was very successful and exceeded our expectations. We had a bigger result with the first Wonderlands game than we did with the first Borderlands game, so that’s something to build on.
Given Gearbox’s penchant for fantasy, it’s understandable that the game’s success has left fans wanting more of the same. After all, Take-Two executives said much the same thing at the launch of the first installment. But that doesn’t mean they’ll be making Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands 2 right away, as Pitchford essentially confirmed that Gearbox’s next game will be the new Borderlands, so Borderlands 4 is the next game from them. From this you can roughly guess what Pitchford and his team are planning. They want to alternate between a sequel to Borderlands and Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, so they’re leapfrogging the two series.
So they’re taking the technological tricks that they learned in Borderlands 4 and bringing them into the spin-off. They have the money to do that because they just bought the team from Embracer Group. Take-Two has become the new owner of Gearbox, and about $460 million changed hands in the transaction. With the acquisition, Take-Two also owns the Borderlands franchise, as well as Risk of Rain and Homeworld.
So it wasn’t just a one-off spin-off, Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands, although we’ll certainly have to wait two or three years for its release, while the release of Borderlands 4 could be much closer than we think. We wouldn’t be surprised if it’s not even six months away.
