Sneak Peek of Mortal Kombat 2 Reveals Iconic Character in Action

MOVIE NEWS – “It has begun!” We now have an exclusive glimpse of Mortal Kombat 2, directly from one of the creators. As reported by ComicBook, Ed Boon has offered fans a first look at the upcoming sequel to the successful 2021 live-action adaptation of the classic video game. The image, shared on Boon’s social media, provides a partial view of Princess Kitana, a beloved character from the game, making her debut in the sequel.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Boon mentioned that he took the photo from producer Todd Garner’s phone during a screening of the rough cut of the film. Boon humorously referenced the numerous video game leaks he has experienced over the years, saying, “I can leak stuff too.”

We don’t see Kitana’s face, but it is known that Adeline Rudolph (The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) is portraying the character. Although Kitana’s appearance has evolved in the video games over the years, it appears that her costume in the film is a faithful representation of the original games. We also get a detailed look at Kitana’s intricately designed steel fans, her signature weapons in the games.

The release of the image comes just days after the San Diego Comic Con, where actor Lewis Tan discussed the upcoming film. Unfortunately for fans, a trailer was not released at the event. Boon’s decision to release an image shortly after Comic Con might be a response to fans who were hoping for a reveal from San Diego.

Which Characters Will Appear in Mortal Kombat 2?

The sequel will expand the roster of characters from the Mortal Kombat universe, though the exact plot remains under wraps. Screenwriter Greg Russo previously revealed that the second film would take place during the Mortal Kombat tournament, explaining the appearance of Kitana and Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban. Filming wrapped earlier this year, which is why Boon can already view a rough cut of the film.

Joining Rudolph and Urban are new cast members Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Ana Thu Nguyen as Queen Sindel, Desmond Chaim as King Jerrod, Damon Herriman as Quan Chi, and Martyn Ford as Shao Khan. Returning cast members include Lewis Tan as Cole Young, Mehcad Brooks as ‘Jax’ Briggs, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, and Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion. Joe Taslim, who portrayed Sub Zero in the first film, will appear in an undisclosed role. Baraka will also appear in the sequel, though it is not revealed whether he will be CGI or portrayed by an actor.
