Baldur’s Gate 3’s Success: How It Became Too Big for Larian

Larian is currently working on two RPGs, and the Belgium-based team doesn’t want to repeat themselves, and Baldur’s Gate 3 started it all for them…

Larian has a big axe to grind. Baldur’s Gate 3 was excellent, and they went on to make two RPGs, in their own style of course, but that came with a few problems. It’s not easy to make a game of the caliber of their previous title based on Dungeons & Dragons. One of the challenges is that the new IP needs to be filled with content and original ideas!

“One of the biggest problems we have now is that whenever we talk about things, we say we did this in Baldur’s Gate 3. And it turns out that we did a lot of things in BG3, when we think about it. It was the same with development. Have you seen this pattern before? Have they used these verbs in this order before? Have they had this emotional arc? So you’re constantly trying to make sure that they’re getting a new experience, and you’re not just repeating yourself, and you’re not just giving them content for content’s sake. Writing Director Adam Smith told PCGamer.

This is not a new problem for Larian. The first Divinity: Original Sin was huge, and the second part was another huge title. So it was no surprise that they had a big problem with Baldur’s Gate 3. The studio has a penchant for experimentation (after all, they have a new Baldur’s Gate planned, which we reported on in the news the other day), and it paid off, as we were not disappointed with what Swen Vincke and his team came up with.

Larian’s next two RPGs are still a long way off, but with so much potential in Baldur’s Gate 3, that’s okay, because you can easily spend five hundred hours with this RPG, and even that might not be enough for many.
