July was a very dark month for Bungie, and after this we really have to ask ourselves if the studio will be able to recover from this situation…?
220 people were laid off at the end of the month, which is 17% of their workforce, and then it was revealed that their CEO Pete Parsons has spent over $2.4 million on his collection of classic cars in the last two years, so it’s no wonder that many are calling for his head. Studio owner Sony is also holding Bungie’s feet to the fire to clean up the mess, but the team seems incapable of doing so. Destiny 2: The Final Shape would be the last big update of the game, but meanwhile Destiny 3 is nowhere to be found, and we hear that the marathon reboot is struggling because the management around it has been replaced, and Bloomberg editor Jason Schreier says that the game is not looking very bright, and that a 2025 release may be untenable…
With the company’s future looking bleak, it’s no wonder Bungie took to Reddit to try and calm things down: “We know the recent changes at Bungie have created uncertainty about the future of Destiny. Please be assured that we remain committed to Destiny, to supporting our community with transparency, and to providing regular updates on the game. We’ll be talking with you all soon about the future of Destiny and plans for our next multi-year journey. As soon as we plant a flag for that date, we’ll let you all know.”

This isn’t the first time Bungie has pulled the “trust us” card, but after so many cuts, it’s a lot for the public to take. One commenter, shieldoversword, summed up our thoughts well: “The only reason we’re here in the first place is because leadership once again messed up and mismanaged things to the point that many talented developers who were absolutely cooking on The Final Shape had to be laid off. I want to see leadership take some responsibility and generally have a new management plan that will be able to sustainably retain all of the developers that make this game great. The rest will fall into place.”
In this week’s This Week in Destiny, Bungie just said the same thing (transparent support for the community…), so don’t be surprised if the team has had enough…
