Try the Fallout 1 Remake: A Promising Start, But Still a Long Way to Go!

Making an unofficial remake of a game is no easy task, and when it’s fan-driven, it’s even harder to pull off.

There’s a new mod in the works for Fallout 4, and no, it’s not Fallout: London (we wrote about that recently, along with the record-breaking full conversion mod made by Team Folon on GOG), but another one that aims to bring the first part of the game to the fourth. It’s far from finished, but at least you can now try out what the old isometric RPG looks like transplanted into the first-person adventure of 2015.

The franchise is having a moment, thanks to the first season of Amazon’s Fallout TV show, and they’ve already ordered season two. And then Bethesda Game Studios released the long-awaited next-gen update for Fallout 4, which threw Team Folon’s plans for Fallout: London when Todd Howard’s team dropped the still-buggy update out of nowhere…

But let’s take a look at the Fallout: Vault 13 mod, available at Nexus Mods. The goal is to port all of Fallout to the Fallout 4 engine, and while it’s not exactly the classic experience that many people like, it’s a new way to experience adventures, at least for now in the form of a demo where you can play a section called The Inyo with Vault 13 and Shady Sands. There are no voices yet, but the modders are planning to add them. After changing special stats, skills don’t change automatically due to a bug, but this will be fixed for release. Fallout: Vault 13 is planned to have five full regions, so we only have a small slice at the moment.

We can only hope that this is not an overly ambitious project. If they set the bar too high, they can run out of steam and usually take YEARS to complete (see Fallout: London). How persistent will they be?
