The Serum and The Count of Monte Cristo in the Running for the European Film Awards

MOVIE NEWS – The European Film Academy has announced the first batch of contenders for this year’s feature film categories: the 29 films include Coralie Fargeat’s body horror The Drug and Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière’s large-scale costume film The Count of Monte Cristo. Both films will be released in domestic cinemas in autumn.

 

The European Film Award honors the most outstanding works of European cinematography. The European Film Academy announced the first round of nominees for the feature film categories on Wednesday: Coralie Fargeat’s body horror The Substance, starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley, as well as Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière’s large-scale Dumas, were announced on Wednesday. -adaptation, The Count of Monte Cristo.

As can be read on the EFA website, the films selected from 26 countries reflect the excellence of European filmmakers and the diversity and creativity of European film artists.

The other candidates will be announced in September, and the candidates will be announced on November 5. The winners will be announced on December 7, 2024, at the award ceremony held in Lucerne.
In the competition program of the 77th Cannes Film Festival, the audience saw for the first time Coralie Fargeat’s latest film, The Substance, starring Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid.

In the film, a once-famous woman obtains drugs on the black market to temporarily create a younger version of herself, only in a much better edition. Fargeat won the best screenplay award at Cannes with it, the film was also praised by the press, praising Demi Moore’s performance to the skies.

The cinematographer of the film is Benjamin Kracun (A Young Woman of Promise, Wild Animal), and the editors are Coralie Fargeat, Jerome Eltabet (The Revenge) and Valentin Féron. The music was composed by Raffertie (I Can Ruin You), the visual designer was Stanislas Reydellet (Crazy Women’s Ball), and the costume designer was Emmanuelle Youchnovski (Café de Flore, Happy Times). The film is expected to be released in domestic cinemas in the fall of 2024, distributed by ADS Service.

Alexandre Dumas’ novel was adapted for the big screen by Matthieu Delaporte and Alexandre de la Patellière, who also wrote the screenplays for the films The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan (2023) and The Three Musketeers: Milady (2023), but it’s been almost ten years since we saw What’s Your Name? also their chamber comedy.

The protagonist of the new Monte Cristo adaptation is a young sailor, Edmond Dantès, who is falsely accused of treason and then imprisoned without trial in the castle of If, a rugged island fortress near Marseille. After many years of captivity, he manages to escape to take revenge on those who falsely accused him as the Count of Monte Cristo.

The audience could see The Count of Monte Cristo at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, out of competition, where the creators received nearly 12 minutes of applause. It is already playing in cinemas in France, and is currently on the top of the ratings list for its seventh week. The film is expected to be released in domestic cinemas in the fall of 2024, distributed by ADS Service.
