It’s a bit funny when we hear about the story elements of an unannounced game… and it’s not like this is the first case around the French publisher!
MP1st reported on the project, codenamed Iridium, which first surfaced in March last year. The cast is being directed by Kim Hurdon (the voice casting director has worked on several Ubisoft projects). In the aftermath of a horrific war, scavengers ravage the ruins of Highpoint City in search of invaluable resources. Once considered the pinnacle of human civilization, Highpoint is now controlled by the forces that defeated it, a cross between a prison and a science experiment gone awry. Intense radiation prevents organic humans from operating in the war zone, so human minds are copied into mechanical shells to explore this hostile landscape.
Illegal factions fight each other for survival in the wastelands, while the Local Authority maintains order as best it can. Now, decades after the fall of Highpoint, something begins to stir in the ashes… something alien. As Whittaker, a man with a shady past and a reputation for taking jobs no one else will, you will experience what it means to trade your humanity for a mechanical shell as you embark on the journey of a lifetime. Whittaker will need stealth, cunning, and a variety of vehicles and weapon systems to reach the epicenter of this mysterious place. Only then will Highpoint reveal its deepest secrets.
At the time, they were looking for an actress to play a character called Octavia. The name, certainly inspired by the Skoda car, was based on a woman in her mid-20s, and they were looking for a darker-skinned actress to play the role. Octavia is a low-level employee of the Event Containment Area Authority’s Infrastructure Division, responsible for the construction and maintenance of the ECA’s vast network of buildings and facilities. Both of her parents were respected scientists in Highpoint before the war. When the Event occurred, Octavia and her father escaped, but her mother was a follower of Highpoint’s self-proclaimed leader, Isaac Armitage, and was lost in the explosion. Octavia is a rebel; she grew up in the ECA and doesn’t like being told what she can do or see there.
Raised by a father who was forced to help the enemy of his own nation, Octavia has no memories or ties to the old Highpoint – the Event Containment Area is the only world she’s ever known. As a young adult, Octavia was forced to take responsibility for her family at an early age, as her father struggled with depression and became obsessed with personal research conducted outside of work, eventually leading to unemployment and a descent into madness. With her inside knowledge of ECAA buildings and protocols, Octavia makes money on the side by helping Sleepwalkers illegally infiltrate the Grid. As her father helped the ECAA understand the event that destroyed his world, he became obsessed with the belief that his wife was somehow still alive and eventually disappeared into the Grid – a virtual death sentence for organic beings.
While this sounds like an exciting idea, given what is happening at Ubisoft, we fear that it could also be a victim of cancellation. This is what happened to Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland recently…
