Will the Until Dawn Remake Come with a ‘Sony Tax’?

There’s a leak about how much Supermassive Games will charge for the remake of their original PlayStation 4 exclusive, and it’s not a fair price if the rumors are true…

Billbil-kun hasn’t leaked the PlayStation Plus (Essential) games list on Dealabs this time (he used to be the one who used to post it month after month, just before the official announcement), but he has spread another Sony rumor. This time it’s about the Until Dawn remake, which won’t change the story in any significant way, but will offer much more spectacular scenes and graphics thanks to the new generation of hardware and the Unreal Engine 5, which is used by almost everyone.

According to the leaker, Until Dawn Remake will cost 60 dollars in the USA. This is already a bit ridiculous, but in Europe it will be even more expensive, as they will ask for 70 euros. In Canada it will be $80 and in Australia $110 (but “down there” everything is usually more expensive and the currency is a bit weaker). But why is the price ridiculous? To give you another example, when The Last of Us Part II was released for PlayStation 5, it was available for 50€ by default. So Sony is starting to raise prices even for remakes, so it really is a kind of Sony tax that you have to pay more for.

Higher prices are also unlikely to be a positive move for the public. It can also lead to lower sales, and Sony will complain that sales were not as good as they expected. It’s a kind of greed, you have to admit: they want to get as much money out of the fans as possible right after release, and so they risk charging more for the remake.

The Until Dawn Remake will be released on PlayStation 5 and PC on October 4, a little more than eight years after the PlayStation 4 original (released on August 25, 2015). Pricing has not been officially announced.
