Supposedly, the whip-wielding, hat-wearing treasure hunter won’t miss out on the PlayStation 5, but will make the jump to Sony’s console later (or, knowing Indy, swing his whip over…).
On Twitter, NateTheHate wrote that Indiana Jones and the Great Circle will be released as a timed exclusive for the Xbox Series and PC in December. Microsoft and MachineGames are using the LucasFilm Games license, and presumably Disney, who owns it, has said they want to see the game on PlayStation 5. This is rumored to happen, but not until six months after release, as exclusivity is supposed to last for six months.
MachineGames and Bethesda announced the Indy project three and a half years ago, back in January 2021. That was when LucasFilm Games was getting into gear, and when Electronic Arts lost its exclusivity on the Star Wars license (the result is Star Wars Outlaws, due out August 30 from Massive Entertainment and Ubisoft). The director is Jerk Gustaffson, and the composer is Gordy Haab, who has tried to incorporate several iconic themes from the films alongside the original songs.
MachineGames (who are known for the Wolfenstein reboot, but have also been involved in more recent Quake projects) will be acquired by Microsoft in 2021, after the Redmond tech giant bought the studio’s parent company Bethesda, ZeniMax, for $7.5 billion, which will presumably announce on the opening night of Gamescom exactly when the mostly first-person action-adventure game will come to Xbox Series and PC. There will also be third-person elements, especially when exploring the environment. It will rely heavily on stealth, but if you’re forced into combat, the whip will certainly be your primary tool, if you’re not forced to use it to solve puzzles.
In any case, Indiana Jones and the Great Circle is the most anticipated Xbox exclusive of 2024 (especially after Avowed slipped to 2025, as we reported), so let’s hope the rumor is true. But until then, it’s all unofficial.
