In a surprising move, Atari has unveiled the Atari 7800+, a modern take on its iconic 1986 gaming system, complete with backward compatibility and a slew of new features. Partnering with Plaion, Atari is bringing back this beloved console, allowing both new and veteran gamers to experience the nostalgia of the 1980s with a contemporary twist.
Atari, a name synonymous with the golden age of video gaming, has been making waves in the industry since the 1970s. Known for revolutionary consoles like the Atari 2600 and timeless games such as Pong and Tetris, Atari has been on a mission to resurrect its classic hardware. Following the successful release of the Atari 2600+ in 2023, Atari is now turning its attention to the 7800 series.
The new Atari 7800+ is a sleek, compact version of the original 7800 console, now equipped with HDMI connectivity, making it easy to hook up to modern televisions. Whether you prefer to play in widescreen mode or stick to the classic 4:3 aspect ratio, this console has you covered. Preloaded with Bentley Bear’s Crystal Quest, the Atari 7800+ is available for preorder at $129.99, with an expected release in winter 2024.
Atari has also announced an array of new games for the Atari 7800+ and Atari 2600+. For the 7800+, gamers can look forward to titles like Asteroids Deluxe, Bounty Bob Strikes Back, and Berzerk. Meanwhile, the Atari 2600+ will be receiving games like Caverns of Mars and the Epyx Game Collection.
To complement the console, Atari is also launching two new wireless controllers: the CX78+ Wireless Gamepad and the CX40 Plus Wireless Joystick. These controllers can connect wirelessly to both the Atari 2600+ and modern PCs via a USB-C adapter, catering to retro gaming enthusiasts who seek the best in classic gameplay.
With backward compatibility for both Atari 2600 and 7800 game cartridges, the Atari 7800+ is not just a tribute to the past—it’s a bridge to the future. Alongside the console, Atari is releasing 10 new game cartridges, with six exclusive to the Atari 7800+, including updates of classics like Berzerk and Space Duel.
