Kevin Costner’s Determination: Will He Finish the Horizon Saga Despite a Rocky Start?

MOVIE NEWS – Kevin Costner’s ambitious Western epic, Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1, faced a tough road after its theatrical release, earning only $34 million on a $50 million budget. Despite the lackluster box office performance, Costner remains determined to complete the four-part series.

The first chapter, which was quickly moved to PVOD platforms in an attempt to recoup losses, left the future of the saga in question. Chapter 2, initially expected to hit theaters earlier this month, saw its plans altered after the poor reception of the first installment. Instead, it will now premiere at the 81st Venice International Film Festival on September 7. Whether it will ever see a theatrical release or go straight to streaming remains uncertain.

In a heartfelt interview with TODAY, Costner, who wrote, directed, and starred in the saga he has been nurturing for years, shared his thoughts on what lies ahead for the remaining chapters. With parts of Chapter 3 already filmed, Costner expressed his deep connection to the project and his resolve to see it through, not just for the audience, but to fulfill a promise he made to himself.

“I love the journey of this thing. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever done, but I love this movie. I love the second one — and the third one’s even harder than the first two, and the fourth one completes the story. I made a promise to myself, I’m trying desperately to keep it, and to bring it to people, these kind of giant stories, and I hope that people fall in love with these characters… The plan is, I’ve already shot a little bit of the third. And to perhaps shoot them back to back next spring.”
