Githmap is an interesting concept because it can make you feel like you’re watching the beginning of an RPG in action, but that’s not the case.
Baldur’s Gate 3 needs no introduction, as the game, released just over a year ago, has won a truckload of awards for good reason (it even won one of the most prestigious sci-fi awards for Larian; we covered it) and has made great use of its tabletop RPG origins (it’s based on Dungeons & Dragons). One Brazilian indie developer, vikintor, thought he’d cash in on the franchise’s popularity by creating a DOOM map that could feature his character and others’ Githyanki. He used the assets of Baldur’s Gate 3 to create what is essentially a third, extended epilogue to one of Larian’s game’s endings.
Githmap has no combat and uses an external view. It’s like looking at the central hub area of an RPG, or possibly the prologue of a Githyanki-themed (non-existent, by definition) game. The look of Doom is a great match for the Planetscape-like visuals. There, it’s common to see almost bizarre industrial buildings juxtaposed with open cathedral skyscrapers and wood-paneled dwellings under an alien sky. All of this will take less than half an hour to explore, as there will be at least two types of keys on the map. (In addition to the red and gold keys, there will also be doors like this one).
Vikintor has added more Githyanki players to the game in the form of 2D sprites, and it’s very similar to what we saw in the first two Baldur’s Gate games. Meanwhile, story-wise, we’re in the midst of Lae’zel and Orpheus’ rebellion, and while the story doesn’t really go anywhere, it’s certainly an excellent idea. You can download it from itch.io, and you don’t even need a copy of DOOM to run it.
This makes the result quite interesting. It’s not a full-fledged fan project of any great power, but it’s good as a sketch, because it could be built upon in the future to create a larger project.
