The studio was previously known for Star Fox, but Argonaut Games has also worked on other franchises in its 22-year history.
Argonaut Games, founded in 1982 by Jez San, is a British company. They are known for Starglider, Starglider 2, Star Fox, Croc: Legend of the Gobbos and Croc 2. They closed their doors in October 2004 and are now coming back as a kind of boutique publisher. They will be re-releasing classic Argonaut Games IPs, but there will also be “exciting new titles” for both current and retro platforms. Their first project will be a remaster of Croc: Legend of the Gobbos. The original was released in September 1997 for the PS1, and the remaster will be released in 2024 for “all curated consoles” (PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One) and PC.
Croc: Legend of the Gobbos, Argonaut’s 1997 multimillion-selling hit, follows Croc, a lovable crocodile, on a quest to save the Gobbos from the clutches of the evil Baron Dante. The game’s charm and creativity made it an instant classic, and the remaster promises to bring the beloved game to a new generation of gamers with enhanced high-definition graphics, updated modern controls, and a nostalgic, fun, and authentic gameplay experience that is sure to capture players’ imaginations and remind them why they fell in love with video games in the first place. In addition, retro gaming fans will be thrilled to learn that the remaster includes the Crocipedia, an extensive and meticulously curated digital museum containing long-lost development assets such as game design documents, concept art, animation tests, team member interviews, and much more.
“I worked closely with Jez on the design and production of Starglider, Argonaut’s first big hit back in 1986, so taking on the mantle of relaunching Argonaut Games nearly four decades later brings me full circle, and we have more exciting announcements in the pipeline in the coming months,” wrote Argonaut Games co-CEO Gary Sheinwald in the press release. “We wanted to honor the legacy of the original game while introducing it to a new audience. The HD remaster allows us to do just that. It’s been a labor of love for our team, and we can’t wait to share it with gamers on all current consoles and PC later this year,” added Argonaut Games co-CEO Mike Arkin. Original Argonaut Games founder Jez San said, “I am thrilled to see the Argonaut name back after 20 years. Argonaut has always been about pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in gaming, and I’m excited to see how the re-launched Argonaut Games builds on that legacy, starting with Croc: Legend of the Gobbos remaster.”
Argonaut will return and Croc will get a new lease on life – sounds very exciting indeed.
