Is Warner Bros. Developing a Matt Reeves’ Batman Game?

This could be the start of a new Batman universe for Warner Bros. Discovery (WBD), rather than the Arkham universe that Rocksteady has used to great success.

This rumor was reported on Puck News by movie insider Matthew Belloni, but the gist of his writing can be found behind the paywall on Reddit. The relevant quote for us goes like this: “Back in 2020, AT&T tried to sell the video game division of Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment for a cool $4 billion. But months later, it was deemed “too valuable to unload.”

Then, when David Zaslav [WBD’s CEO] took over, many advised him to unload the games. But Zaslav still sees the games unit as strategic, especially as WBD’s various divisions begin to collaborate more closely on properties like the upcoming Penguin HBO show and game, both of which are set in the 2022 Batman movie,” Belloni wrote.

So the new game could be set in the Batman universe created by Matt Reeves, and the movie first hit theaters two years ago. It’s unlikely that Penguin will be the main character, although eight episodes of the game will be released between September 19 and November 10. That is, if Batman takes a turn for the strategic genre, because the villain isn’t exactly known for his action moves…

Batman as a protagonist could be a good choice, as Rocksteady, known for the Batman: Arkham titles, made a big splash with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League. In any case, it’s odd that WBD could accept a game set in a universe independent of the DCU created by James Gunn, when Gunn said that the movies, TV shows and games would all be connected.

Meanwhile, the next Batman game will be Batman: Arkham Shadow, which will be a sequel to Batman: Arkham Origins, developed by Camouflaj… but it won’t be a console, PC title, as it will be on the Meta Quest 3, so it will be a VR game.
