Square Enix Eyes Expansion: Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo Consoles?

Square Enix is not shying away from its ambition to expand the reach of Final Fantasy XIV. The popular MMORPG may soon be making its way to “Nintendo consoles,” according to the game’s director, Naoki Yoshida. During a recent interview at Gamescom 2024 with Gamereactor, Yoshida expressed his enthusiasm about bringing the game to new platforms and reaching even more players.

Square Enix has made it clear that it aims to make Final Fantasy XIV accessible to a broader audience by translating the MMORPG into multiple languages and considering ports to various platforms where millions of potential players await. One platform that has yet to see this expansion is the Nintendo Switch, primarily due to the device’s technical limitations. However, Yoshida remains optimistic about the game’s future on “Nintendo consoles.”

At Gamescom 2024, Yoshida hinted, “I’m sure all the media and our players are probably suspecting that they really want our game to come out on Nintendo consoles, but the concept we have for Final Fantasy XIV is to release our game on as many devices as possible.”

He continued by saying, “So looking towards achieving that goal, we’re working on it, moving forward, and having discussions. So I hope everyone can expect news soon.” Yoshida has previously mentioned his openness to releasing Final Fantasy XIV on Nintendo’s upcoming console, which is speculated to launch between April and June 2025.

Square Enix Expanding Its Horizons on Xbox

Recently, Square Enix also announced plans to bring more of its games to the Xbox platform, following the arrival of Final Fantasy XIV on the Xbox Series X|S. During the event in Cologne, Yoshida noted, “We can take advantage of this to strengthen the Xbox community in relation to the Final Fantasy franchise.” Similarly, the director of Final Fantasy XVI has shown his satisfaction with the game’s upcoming release on Xbox Series X|S, signaling a broader strategy by Square Enix to engage with Xbox players.
